KAMAL ALJAFARI

DIRECTOR AND VISUAL ARTIST

Kamal Aljafari is a Palestinian artist born in Ramla in 1972. He studied at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne and has for many years worked across cinema, visual arts, and experimentation, weaving together fiction, non-fiction, and archival materials. His practice focuses on memory, identity, and the traces left by history in places and images, with particular attention to Palestine and its representation. Through the reuse and manipulation of archival images, his films question the perspectives through which Palestine has been portrayed, restoring visibility to places, people, and stories that have been erased or marginalized.

His works, presented at numerous international festivals, museums, and institutions, include The Roof (2006), Port of Memory (2009), Recollection (2015), An Unusual Summer (2020), and A Fidai Film (2024, part of the programme of FIT 2026), which received the Jury Award at Visions du Réel. In 2025, he presented With Hasan in Gaza in the international competition at the Locarno Film Festival, where it received the Europa Cinemas Label. His work has been the subject of retrospectives in various contexts, including IndieLisboa, Olhar de Cinema, Museo Nazionale del Cinema in Turin.
