With a strong attention to aesthetics, Casero uses performance art as a critical tool to explore contemporary issues. One example is his 2019 video Cryptocurrency Openoutcry, in which he investigates the decline of the open outcry system – the gestural language once used in stock trading, now replaced by digital technologies.

His work is deeply rooted in historical memory: his perspective on the present always involves a clear-eyed engagement with the past. The titles of his works clearly reflect this approach – not as a form of nostalgia, but as a way to understand the complexity and layered nature of reality. Casero examines the present while remaining aware of the roots from which it emerges.

Casero also confronts the legacy of Franco’s dictatorship. Born in 1991, sixteen years after the dictator’s death, he inherits the pain and stories of previous generations and gives them a voice. In 2019, he created Oficina Franco and Parking Franco, two projects that expose the privileges still enjoyed by Franco’s family – gained during the regime and never truly challenged. His is a profoundly political theatre that seeks to reinterpret history in light of the truths denied or suppressed by dominant cultural narratives.

In 2022, Casero developed El pacto del Olvido (a work hosted at FIT 2025) which weaves together individual and collective memories, opening up a space for reflection on historical research, the reinterpretation of events, and how they are viewed in the present. The piece offers an alternative perspective on sites of memory, filling the voids – both deliberate and accidental – left by injustice, fear, power, and dominant narratives.

Sergi Casero Nieto has established himself as one of the most distinctive voices on the young European performance scene. His performances have been staged at numerous international festivals and institutions, including Théâtre de la Ville in Paris, Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid, Festival delle Colline Torinesi in Turin and the Veem House for Performance in Amsterdam. In recent years, he has been in residence at the Fábrica de Creación Fabra i Coats in Barcelona, at Matadero Madrid, and at Live Works – Free School of Performance at Centrale Fies in Italy, where he is now an associate artist through the Fies Factory programme.

< photo Carmen Gray

@ FIT

No pares (sigue, sigue)
2026 Edition
29 – 30.09 | 02.10 – 11.10

El Pacto del Olvido
2025 Edition
03.10 – 12.10

Sergi Casero Nieto – a Catalan performer originally from Barcelona who has been based in Amsterdam for several years – is a multifaceted artist working at the intersection of design, historical research, and live performance.
